Review for A Month in the Country From P. B. in What's ON: Nothing to do with the play by Turgenev (Simon Gray’s masterly screenplay is based on the novella by J.L.Carr which was nominated for the 1980 Booker Prize). Pat O’Connor’s superb second feature A Month in the Country is a gem of a film, its miniaturist beauties a fine tribute to the best of the British renaissance. Not even made in Yorkshire (save for three days) where the story is set in a perfect English summer in 1920 in the isolated fictional village of Oxgodby, the production is a triumph of talent over resources and Kenith Trodd (long associated with fine BBC dramas and such films as Brimstone and Treacle and Dreamchild) has cleverly assembled the best of artistes to bring every fragile moment of this wistful, elegiac romance to memorable and moving life. It is immaculately cast, with a strong—and young—central trio, fleshing out the unspoken passions and regrets…..
So much is said in the film when so little is uttered—but the moments of humour, the painterly colour photography, and the very correctness of every set, shot and gesture do not allow any feeling of tedium or terseness. Covering kindred sexual terrain, incidentally, it is so much more engaging than Maurice, and precious in quite another sense. |
